Little Greenbrier Schoolhouse – Cemetery

Little Greenbrier was a mountain community located near Wears Valley between Cove Mountain and Little Roundtop Mountain.   The community which is now long gone was there through the 1800 & 1900’s.  During that time they were told if they built a schoolhouse the government would provide them with the funding for a school teacher.  In the ways of the world back in them days,  everyone came together on the given day in 1882 and they ‘raised’  the schoolhouse.   The Schoolhouse served the community for more than 50 years and functioned both as the school and church.  The church left a cemetery just across the gravel road from the schoolhouse.

map of little greenbrierYou can reach the Little Greenbrier Schoolhouse by hiking the trail or by the gravel road that runs up there off Lyons Springs Road.  Lyons Springs Road is the road that you use to get from Wears Valley to the Smoky Mountain National Park.

From the schoolhouse, you can hike up the Walker Cabin.  (just off the road there is an abandoned road that is chained off – this is the start of the trail that leads back to the cabin)  The hike up to the cabin is a little more than a mile and the trail follows a brook for part of the way.  Bears have been spotted in this area,  so use proper precautions when hiking to the cabin.

The Walker cabin is the last remaining cabin from the Greenbrier community.  The Walkers were an interesting family of 5 sisters who never married and refused to sell or leave their farm to the government when they made the Smoky Mountains into a national park.  The national press got wind of the sisters in the 1940s and wrote an article about their story.  From then on until the last sister past on in the 1960s Little Greenbrier and the Walker Sisters drew many tourists who wanted to meet them.
